Class Description

NMR Spectroscopy: Nuclear spin orientation in a magnetic field. Quantum chemical description. Screening constants and spin-spin couplings. First order spectra and second order effects. Heteronuclear coupling. Fourier Transform NMR. Experimental set-up: locking and shimming. Main NMR parameters and their relationships. Spectra acquisition, data processing, apodization, main artifacts related to signal digitization.

Basics of spectral interpretation. Selected exempla. Basic concepts of 2D NMR. Correlation based on chemical connectivity or dipolar interactions. Measurement of diffusivity by NMR spectroscopy. NMR of heterogeneous samples or soft matter: high resolution magic angle spinning NMR. Case study of small molecules entrapped in polymeric frames.

Exercises: Tutorials on spectral interpretation in one and two dimensions. Tutorial on signal processing.

Laboratory: Full set-up, data acquisition, data processing and faq on one of the NMR spectrometers of the Department.
